Chapel of the Magdalene
The Chapel of Mary Magdalene is one of the three chapels built around 1300 in order to meet the insistent demand for space by those who wished to be buried next to the tomb of St. Francis.
It was bought by the Bishop of Assisi Teobaldo Pontano, whose family coat of arms - a three-arched bridge - is repeated several times on the walls. The paintings depict in seven frames the first image biography of Magdalene, after the discovery of her remains in Aix en Provence between 1279 and 1280. The subjects were inspired by the hagiographic account by Jacopo da Varazze in his Golden Legend. In this extraordinary narrative, in which the majority of the critics recognises Giotto’s signature, a gradual recovery of the ancient naturalism which is the defining feature of the maestro's mature work can be perceived.
