Saint Stephen
This is the side panel of a lost polyptych, which for a long time was deemed to have the beautiful Madonna and Child of the National Gallery of Art in Washington at its centre. The work has reached us in a very good state of preservation and was purchased by the renowned scholar Herbert Horne at an auction in London during the early years of the twentieth century. He was the first person to be convinced that Giotto was the author, a fact which is now unanimously acknowledged.
