Peruzzi Chapel
The Peruzzi family was one of the richest families in Europe and the chapel, which Giotto painted for them immediately became one of his most admired works. The chapel was covered with lime during the eighteenth century and the paintings were only recovered in the mid-nineteenth century. However many of the “dry” finishes have not reached us, but it is still possible to understand the high quality of execution of the decoration.
The cycle presents the parallel stories of St. John the Baptist on the left wall and of St. John the Evangelist on the right wall.  The point of view of the scene is greatly foreshortened, as it is located in a very natural way at the entrance of the passageway to the chapel. The complex painted architecture is also dramatically foreshortened and yet always defined in a plausible way, supporting the argument that Giotto was well versed in architectural practice.
