Florence and Settignano
Itinerary
The founder of modern pictorial language was probably born in the district of Santa Maria Novella in Florence around 1265, where Bondone (the father) had moved from Mugello to work as a blacksmith. At the beginning of his training the young artist therefore had to relate to the flourishing thirteenth-century artistic tradition of the Tuscan capital, before proceeding with his extraordinary and relentless work of renewal, particularly based on his early experiences in Rome and Assisi. The emergence of Giotto’s work can be followed in each of its phases in Florence and its domination over the city’s fourteenth century rich art scene, as can be imagined, was practically complete. For this reason, especially in Florence, it seems appropriate to limit the matter to the places and original works by the maestro; that is unquestionably by "Giotto".
