National Museum of the Bargello

National Museum of the Bargello

Firenze - Museums

The Bargello, one of the oldest civil buildings of the city, was the seat of the Capitano del Popolo, later of the Podestà and from the sixteenth century of the Capitano di Giustizia, the so-called "Bargello". Remodelled at mid 19th century, the building dates back in its original form to the XIII-XIV centuries. With the unification of Italy it became the seat of the National Museum. Today it houses an important collection of sculptures and medieval, Renaissance and modern art objects.
