Church of Santa Croce

Church of Santa Croce

Firenze - Church

Begun in 1295, the Basilica, probably by Arnolfo di Cambio, is one of the greatest achievements of Gothic architecture in Italy. The façade was completed in Gothic Revival style (1853-63). Santa Croce houses the tombs of great Italians such as Michelangelo, Ugo Foscolo, Galileo Galilei.
Giotto probably frescoed at least four chapels and painted four wooden altar panels. The contribution by his followers Bernardo Daddi, Taddeo Gaddi, Maso di Banco is also very important.
The Bardi Chapel frescoes were painted on behalf of one of the wealthiest families in Europe, and are among the absolute masterpieces of Giotto’s art.
