Palazzo della Ragione

Palazzo della Ragione

Padova - Palace

Palazzo della Ragione is the most representative monument of the political power in Padua during the municipal age, the seat of the court justice and the heart of all merchant activities.
The building, which underwent profound changes over time, dates back to 1218, but the first decorative phase began in 1271, when its various court seats were marked with emblems accompanied by inscriptions, mostly allegorical, and elements from a symbolic bestiary.
The building as it stands now was erected between 1306 and 1309 according to a project by Giovanni of the Eremitani, who created an immense room on the first floor with a “ship’s-keel” wooden ceiling externally protected by lead plates and porticoes along the squares which, in addition to having a static function, increased the business space.
