The Basilica of Sant'Antonio

The Basilica of Sant'Antonio

Padova - Basilica

The Basilica of Sant’Antonio was begun after the canonisation of the saint, who died in Arcella, Padua in 1231. His body was initially buried in the Franciscan church of Santa Maria Mater Domini, which was soon incorporated into the construction site of the new building. The transfer of the body took place in 1263. The construction work proceeded eastward and in 1310 a varia et immensa mutatio was documented, a term that refers to the construction phase of the domes. The church was probably completed by circa 1350, with its seven domes arranged on two axes so as to form a cross. The monastery rooms annexed to the building on the south side include the oldest cloister of the Magnolia, where the chapter house with frescoes by Giotto or by artists very close to him is located, the almost contemporary one of the Library, and the Novitiate or Sacristy one.
